The Crow’s Theatre and The Musical Stage Company’s co-production of Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812 by Dave Malloy has been one of the highlights of the 2023/24 Toronto theatre season. After playing to sold-out houses for a record-breaking 16 weeks at Streetcar Crowsnest, the smash hit musical is transferring to Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre as part of the 2024/25 Mirvish Main Subscription Season.
Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812, by celebrated and award-winning composer Dave Malloy is based on a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace.
Young and impulsive, Natasha arrives in Moscow to await the return of her fiancé, Prince Andrey, from the front lines of Napoleon’s attempt to invade Russia. When she falls under the spell of Moscow society’s notorious playboy, the dashing rogue Anatole, it is up to Pierre, a family friend in the middle of an existential crisis, to pick up the pieces of Natasha’s shattered reputation and offer her hope and redemption.
Praised as “both the most innovative and the best new musical to open on Broadway since Hamilton” by The New York Times and “one of the decade’s best musicals” by Time Out, New York, The Great Comet is the winner of two Tony Awards, three Lucille Lortel Awards, the Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Musical, a Special Obie Citation, and the Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theatre. This audacious work is recognized for expanding the possibilities of musical theatre with its daring score and bold storytelling.
Interested in Stage Seating? Here’s what you need to know.
Choosing stage seating means you're not just watching the story — you might become part of it. To help everything run smoothly (and keep the magic alive), there are a few important things to keep in mind:
- Stair access only. The stage seating is accessible only by stairs on stage left and stage right.
- Arrive early. Aim to be at the theatre at least 20 minutes before showtime. Latecomers will be relocated to alternate seats.
- Dress the part. Dark clothing is recommended — it helps you blend into the world of the play and keeps distractions to a minimum.
- Pack light. You may bring one small bag on stage. Anything extra will need to be left at coat check.
- No snacks or drinks. Concession purchased bottled water will be permitted on stage but to preserve the stage environment, no food will be allowed in this section.
- Stay seated. During the performance, we ask that you remain in your seat unless directed otherwise.
- Your view. Your view may be partially obstructed during certain scenes, as you will be right in the action of the actors and musicians.
- Ushers. There will be two ushers on stage to assist you throughout the performance; one on stage right and the other on stage left. If you need assistance during the performance please signal to one.
- Interaction with the actors. One of the actors may interact with a few of the audience members seated on stage. If you prefer not to interact, please signal your reluctance if an actor approaches you. They will then choose someone else.
- Programs: Will be handed out after the performance to avoid disrupting the atmosphere.
- Intermission. There will be one 20-minute intermission, so plan washroom trips accordingly. You will need to return to your seats on the stage in good time for the second act.
Theatre management reserves the right to relocate or remove patrons, if needed, to ensure the best and safest experience for all.
